ST PETER is the Patron saint of our church at Caboolture.

Peter was one of the Twelve Apostles who Jesus chose as his original disciples.  We read many accounts of Peter’s life in the New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.

Peter was a Galilean fisherman, originally named Simon.  His name was changed to Peter, meaning the rock.  He is often depicted being given special roles of responsibility and leadership from Jesus.

After Jesus' death and resurrection, Peter continued Jesus’ work and is recognised as the first Pope.  Saint Peter is often referred to as “the rock on which the church was built”.

His feast day is celebrated on 29th June.

ST MARY

"Let it be done to me according to your word …"
At the announcement that she would give birth to "the Son of the Most High" without knowing man, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that "with God nothing will be impossible": "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word." Thus, giving her consent to God's word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus. Espousing the divine will for salvation wholeheartedly, without a single sin to restrain her, she gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son; she did so in order to serve the mystery of redemption with him and dependent on him, by God's grace.

As St. Irenaeus says, "Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race."[141] Hence not a few of the early Fathers gladly assert …: "The knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience: what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith."[142] Comparing her with Eve, they call Mary "the Mother of the living" and frequently claim: "Death through Eve, life through Mary.

ST MICHAEL

Angels are mysterious beings. Our culture has a lot of misconceptions about angels--what they are, who they are, and what they do. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), an angel is a being of pure spirit; that is “what” they are. St. Augustine tells us that the word “angel” is what they do: they are messengers and servants of the Most-High God.

There are three archangels named in the Bible: Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. These messengers served God’s people at different times and had different purposes. They had vastly diverse missions, each corresponding to their very identity and being. Let’s look at St Michael.

St. Michael is known as the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts and the defender of God’s people. According to the Catholic Bible Dictionary, Michael means “Who is like God?”. In the Book of Revelation, “Michael and his angels” battle the dragon, an ancient symbol of the devil, and throw him and his followers out of heaven. Christianity honours him as a patron of the nation of Israel, God’s chosen people of the Old Testament. Today, Michael is still thought of as a guardian of the Church, God’s people of the New Testament.

The names of these angels tell us their missions. Michael (Who is like God) reminds us that there is no one like our God who deserves and desires our love.

Sara Stacey

ST THERESE OF LISEIUX is the Patron saint of our church at Bribie Island.  She was named as Patron Saint when the church was built in 1964.

Popularly known as the Little Flower, Therese of Lisieux was canonized in 1925 and is one of 3 female ‘Doctors of the Church’  It has been quoted that St. Therese's message is important to us today because, "Quite simply, her story reveals the truth of the gospel message of love." The greatest of all is that he has shown me my littleness and how, of myself, I am incapable of anything good. -St. Therese of Lisieux

Her feast day is celebrated on 1st October.
